JOHN A. RATTRAY
1922--2008
John A. Rattray, a founder and gold card member of the NPRA and a gold card member of the ICA, died June 4 at his home near Condon, Oregon. He was 86.
Mr. Rattray was born April 20, 1922 to William and Ethel Morgan Rattray. He was raised with one brother and four sisters on the family ranch where he raised his own six daughters. He graduated in 1940 from Gilliam County High School in Condon. He married his high school sweetheart Wilda R. Hawes in 1941 and spent the rest of his life on the family ranch.
He will be remembered with fondness as a brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, cowboy, wild horse chaser, stock contractor, and rancher. His unique ability to work with horses let him live the life he loved—training horses for cutting, reining and ranch work as well as selecting the best bucking stock for rodeos. As a rodeo contestant he competed in every event except the saddle bronc riding and worked as a pickup man for many years. His rodeo stock won many awards and he worked hard to have bucking stock for every level of contestant—junior and high school riders, inexperienced and experienced riders and professional bucking stock riders. He was a founding member of the Arlington Saddle Club and the Condon Rodeo Club as well as the NPRA. He is well known throughout the west for his ability to catch wild horses.
Survivors include daughters, Rita Rattray, Jan Moffit, Canda Rattray, Jonna McKay, Rena Kennedy, Becki McIntosh and their families. He is also survived by his brother Bill and sisters, Winnie Nelson, Helen Murray, Wilma Logan, and Vi Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Wilda, and his parents.
Memorial donations may be made to Pioneer Memorial Hospice, PO Box 9, Heppner, OR 97836 or to the charity of your choice.
